Main Difference
Both, cerebrum and cerebellum are an integral part of the brain. Main difference between cerebrum and cerebellum is, cerebrum controls the higher functions of the brain and cerebellum controls the motion and position of the body.
Cerebellum is adjacent to the pons, in the lower posterior fossa while cerebrum is located at a higher position, anteriorly and controls mainly the motor functions of the body. Cerebellum is smaller is size while cerebrum is larger as compares to cerebellum.
Cerebrum
Cerebrum is located in the anterior portion of the cranium. It is divided into two hemispheres which are joined together by corpus callosum. It basically controls the motor functions of the body, touch sensation, panning, organization. The outer layer of cerebrum is made up of grey and white matter, which is called cerebral cortex.
The cerebrum is the largest part of the brain, which forms most of the weight of the brain. Cerebral cortex is divided into 4 lobes which are called occipital, frontal, temporal and parietal. It also consists of a median vermis.
Cerebellum
Cerebellum is located in the posterior cranial fossa, adjacent to pons. It is located above the brain stem and controls the balance, position, equilibrium and muscle coordination. It consists of two cerebellar hemispheres which is divided by a vermis. Upper surface of cerebellum is made up of grey matter and covered by cortex called cerebellar cortex.
The cerebellum is also called little brain and it is further divided into 3 lobes. One central lobe and two lateral lobes. It is the largest part of the hindbrain.
Key Differences
Cerebrum is the largest part of forebrain and cerebellum is the largest part of the hindbrain.
Cerebrum is the largest part of the brain and cerebellum is the second largest part of the brain.
Cerebrum controls motor function while cerebellum control movements.Cerebrum consists of 4 prominent lobes.
White matter does not form arbor vitae in cerebrum but forms arbor vitae in cerebellum.
Cerebellum consists of greater number of neurons as compared to cerebrum.
