Chemical Oxygen Demand or COD:- It is the oxygen requirement by chemical K2Cr207 for oxidation of total organic matter (biodegradable + non biodegradable) in water.

  • Special note:- COD value is always higher than BOD value.

Biological magnification:- Such type tissue gets accumulated due to increase in concentration along the food chain which is known as biological magnification.

  • Special Note:- The non biodegradable pollutant like Al, Hg, Fe, DDT, pesticides, phenolic compound ABS (Alkyl benzene sulphonate) are not decomposed by micro-organisms. The highest concentration occurs in top consumer.
