Answer:

Explanation:

CHEMICAL SYNAPSE :

In chemical synapses, information is transferred through the release of a neurotransmitter from one neuron and detection of the neurotransmitter by an adjacent cell.

ELECTRICAL SYNAPSE :

In electrical synapses, the cytoplasm of adjacent cells is directly connected by clusters of intercellular channels called gap junctions.

NCERT based Answer for Class 11 Biology Students

Electrical synapse:

 At an electrical synapse, ionic current spreads directly from one cell to another through gap junctions.

 Each gap junction contains tubular protein structures called connexons that form tunnels to connect the cytosol of two cells.

 Gap junctions are found in cardiac muscle, developing embryo and in some regions of brain.

Electrical synapses allow faster communication than do chemical synapses. Therefore, these synapses synchronize the activity of neurons or muscles fibers in a better way.

Chemical synapses:

 At a chemical synapse, the membranes of pre– and post–synaptic neurons are separated by a fluid filled space called synaptic cleft.

 Axon terminals (synaptic knobs) contain vesicles filled with neurotransmitters.

 When an impulse arrives at the axon terminal, it stimulates fusion of synaptic vesicles with plasma membrane and release of neurotransmitters (exocytosis) in the synaptic cleft.

 The released neurotransmitters bind to their specific receptors, present on postsynaptic membrane.

 This binding opens ion channels and generates action potential in post synaptic neuron.

 Neurotransmitters may be excitatory or inhibitory in their action.
