A judge is anyone who is authorised to preside over a court of law, hold hearings, and dispense justice lawfully. Many a times the law officers of courts subordinate to district courts are also referred to as a magistrate (limited judicial authority).
Judges of India are collectively called the Judiciary. Now hierarchically, subordinate courts and its judges form the bottom of such a collective then district courts, then high courts of states (not all states have a High Court) and finally the Supreme Court in Delhi.
Imagine them in an upright pyramid with 4 levels that has a broader base and a narrower apex. The apex that is the Supreme Court and its judges.
The senior most judge of a High Court is called the Chief Justice of that High Court, e.g. Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court.
The senior most judge of Supreme Court is called The Chief Justice of India. He is appointed by the President Of India. As apparent, he/she is appointed on seniority basis (there has been some debate as to include merit as one of the criteria). Thus, CJI occupies the top position of the entire Judiciary system of the country as well as the head of the Supreme Court of India.
Hope this is helpful! :)
