Inspired air has less CO2 than alveolar air.

The air that we inspire is a mixture of gases. The most important of these are nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide and water vapour. The air that we expire is not the same. ... When the warm, wet air from our lungs meets the cold air of the atmosphere the water vapour condenses into mist.
