since the intermolecular spaces between the molecules of solid are very less, therefore it cannot be compressed too much i.e. molecules cannot be further brought closer
whereas in gases due to High intermolecular spaces between the molecules, it can be compressed to a higher extent.

Solid:-A solid cannot be compressed much because its particles are already very closely packed and there hardly any space between them.
Gas:-A gas can be compressed easily because its particles are far apart and there are large space between them(which can reduce by compression).
