Both are different as in Friction Stud welding, the stud is rotated with high rpm against the work piece and generated heat melts the material to a plastically molten state. Then an axial load is applied till a proper hold time to complete the joint.
Where as in case of Friction Stir welding the
tool is inserted in between the mating metal pieces and temperature is raised to the same state and it solidifies itself as one metal.
