Cortical and Juxtamedullary Nephrons:

 Majority of nephrons (about 85%) have short loops of Henle that penetrate only into superficial region of renal medulla. These nephrons are called cortical nephrons.

 In some nephrons (15%), the loop of Henle is very long and runs deep into the medulla. These nephrons are called juxtamedullary nephrons.

Note: Juxtamedullary nephrons enable kidneys to excrete highly concentrated urine.
