A basic definition of an ionic compound is that they are molecules that consist of charged ions. Theseions have opposite (both negative and positive) charges. On the other hand, covalent compounds are non-metals which are bound together, and consist of two electrons that are sharedbetween two atoms

COVALENT BONDS

1. A covalent bond is formed between two non metals that have similar electronegativities. Neither atom is strong enough to attract electrond from the other. For stabilization, they share their electrons promoter molecular orbit with others.
2. Polarity: low
3. State at room temperature :Liquid or gaseous.
4. Shape: definite shape
5. Melting point: low
Covalent bonding is a form of chemical bonding between two non metallic atoms which is characterized by the sharing of pairs of electrons between atoms and other covalent bonds.
6. Boiling points : low
7. Example: Methane (CH4)

IONIC BONDS

1. An ionic bond is formed between a metal and a nonmetal, non metal are stronger than metal and can get electrons very easily from the metal. These two opposite ions attract each other and form the ionic bond.
2. Polarity: high
3. State at room temperature : solid
4. Shape: no definite shape
5. Melting point : high
Ionic bond also known as electrovalent bond, is a type of bond formed from the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions in a chemical compound. These kinds of bonds occur mainly between a metallic and a non metallic atom
6. Boiling point: high
7. Example: Sodium chloride ( NaCl ).
