Failure of thyroid secretion causes retardation of growth of all forms (physical, mental and sexual) in young ones. Cretinism occurs from the deficiency of thyroid hormone. Myxoedema: On the other hand, myxedema is caused in adults due to the deficiency of thyroid hormones.

Difference between cretinism and goitre​:

Cretinism:

  • It is caused by the deficiency of the hormone called thyroxin (Thyroid hormone).
  • It is a Congenital iodine deficiency syndrome which is a condition during child birth.
  • When the mother is deficient in the consumption of Iodine, it leads to lower level of thyroxin hormone.
  • The symptoms of cretinism are mental retardation, growth abnormalities.

Goitre:

  • Goitre is observed as swelling in the neck region.
  • It is caused by iodine deficiency.
  • The abnormal enlargement of thyroid gland results in goitre.
  • Difficulty breathing, swallowing, coughing and dizziness are symptoms of goitre.
