Dinoflagellates are protists, half of the known species possessing chloroplast hence photosynthetic, while the other half being heterotrophic. Dinoflagellates are unique as they possess two flagella. The transverse flagellum providing forward motion to the organism while the longitudinal flagellum helps in propulsion. There is a rigid outer cell covering called theca. The cytoplasm contains typical eukaryotic cell organelles.
