A laser printer is much faster and still cheaper to operate than an inkjet, but cannot create carbon copies and the toner cartridges are expensive even if they last a long time. Functional difference: A dot matrix printer works like a type writer in that it has a ribbon which is struck against the paper by a “hammer”
Inkjet printers spray small drops of ink onto the paper. The drops are very small, so very fine detail is required. ... Dot matrix printers fire a fine wire, through an inked ribbon, onto the page.
