Even though the imperial succession was never really sorted out, during the principate civil wars for the throne were rather rare. When there was no clear successor for the throne, leading generals fought it out, as they did in the year of the 4 emperors (after Nero when Vespasian won) and in the year of the 5 emperors (after Commodus when Septimius Severus won), but those were relatively rare events.
