A strong Democracy requires political participation from a large number of of its citizens. Citizens are called to action in a number of ways :
They must be able to sit on juries (large and small)They must be able to serve in the armed forces. They must be able to hold offices in their government. They must be able to understand laws put forward by their government. They must be able to vote for candidates who represent their interests. They must be able to run for offices and hold those posts if elected.
To do all this, they must at least have a mastery of reading , writing, arithmetic, and history. Additionally they must be able to analyse truth from fiction, and have a familiarity with the legal traditions of the country. Finally, they should be taught the essential values and core cultural beliefs of their nation.
That’s what public education is for. It’s not job training. It’s Citizenship school.
