elemental semiconductors are those elements which itself act as a semiconductor by origin like silicon, germanium etc.
compound semiconductor on the other hand are those substances formed artificially by mixing two different types of elements to obtain semiconductor like properties..for example GaAs is a compound semiconductor formed by mixing gallium and arsenic. and is called gallium arsenide..
