NCERT based Answer for Class 11 Biology Students
Exocrine glands: These secrete their products into ducts which carry the secretions into body cavities (e.g., saliva) or to the outer surface of the body (e.g., sweat). E.g., sweat, sebaceous (oil), mucous and digestive glands.
Endocrine glands:
These secrete their products (hormones) into the extracellular space around the secretary cells, rather than into ducts.
The secretion then diffuses into capillaries and is carried away by the blood.
Hormones are non-nutrient chemicals which act as intercellular messengers and are produced in trace amounts.
Pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal and pineal glands are exclusively endocrine glands.
Hypothalamus, thymus, pancreas, ovaries, testes, kidney, stomach, small intestine, liver, heart and placenta secrete hormones along with performing other functions, i.e., these organs are not exclusively endocrine glands.
