Exogenous trees, which comprise the great majority of modern trees (all conifers, and all broadleaf trees), grow by the addition of new wood outwards, immediately under the bark. Endogenous trees, mainly in the monocotyledons (e.g. palms), grow by addition of new material inwards.

Explanation:

  • The endogenous trees are those trees in which new materials are being added up in the inner side of the bark whereas the exogenous trees are those in which the new materials are being added at the outer side of the bark.
  • In the endogenous trees the material being added up in the form of longitudinal fibrous mass whereas the exogenous trees the materials are being added in the center in the form of new bark layer.
  • In the endogenous trees the examples are bamboo, sugarcane and banana whereas the Coniferous trees are the example of exogenous trees.
