As far as the Indian education system is concerned, there are two types of English courses.

Bachelor of Arts (BA) in English (Honours) - It is the more rigorous and academically involved course, and most people who are serious about a career in academics (or even journalism) take it up.BA in English (General) - It is a simpler course involving often lesser number of papers and a simpler framework. It is ideal for those seeking a graduation degree with a good knowledge of English and/or pursuing a Honours in some other stream.

You'd ooften be asked to take up General courses along with Honours in an Honours course.  So if you're doing English Honours you could take History General (I'm partial towards history). If you're doing History Honours, you could take English General. If you're studying for only a General degree, you could take English General with History General and say Political Science General.

So the difference would be between BA Honours and General (also informally called Pass). Some universities have introduced English Major and Minor but these are generally rehashed versions of Honours and General.

Hope this helped!

I have done my BA (H) in English from Mats University Raipur and now I am doing my MA from Osmania University.

The basic difference between these two courses is that in BA (Hons), you study a particular specialization paper in the final years/semester whereas in BA there is no specialization.

BA (h) has helped me cover many major points in Literature that are still new to my fellow classmates. Half of the syllabus in my PG had already been covered in my UG. So that gives me an upper-hand everytime.

I don't think that there exists such a thing as just BA ( English) . If it has a particular subject name attached to it , it becomes a degree in hons.

BA (Engilsh) is an undgraduate level degree which a student can pursue from some universities in the county. ( Not all universities offer Hons degree but most of them do now.

In BA (Pass) also called as just BA involves various subjects according to the chosen stream of humanities, sciences or arts. You have to take these subjects as prescribed by the college/university norms and regulations. Whereas in case of a BA (Hons) you specialise in a particular subject eg English ( then it's called BA hons(English) . An honours degree is usually of 4 years duration. The first year you are to study different subjects like in a BA (Pass) course and then for the next three years you study the subject of your specialisation eg English in this case ( as per your question) .

Sometimes , depending on the college there are certain criteria for getting yourself eligible for an Hons degree like you might be required to score above a particular level 75% or above in a subject in your first year .

Now that the graduation course has been divided in semesters ( it was not the case before in all the colleges ) , the requirements may have been altered accordingly.

It all depends on the college where you are seeking admission in to and the streams as well.

I hope my answer helps…

An honours degree in any subject is a specialised degree in that particular subject. It is more intensive and more subject focussed. There are lesser electives and your focus area remains the subject which you have chosen to do your honours in. A general BA degree, however, gives you the chance to choose your major subjects (usually fixed combinations offered by the colleges) and minor subjects (or electives). Here, the course is not as comprehensive and all-encompassing because you study more than one major subject. Since it is not specialised, you learn different subjects but do not go in depth
