The epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a process by which epithelial cells lose their cellpolarity and cell-cell adhesion, and gain migratory and invasive properties to become mesenchymalstem cells; these are multipotent stromal cells that can differentiate into a variety of cell types.
