Equilibrium governed separation process is a separation process which is based on an equilibrium stage concept.

Equilibrium governed separation processes the product phase are in equilibrium with the inlet phases.

Some of the popular equilibrium processes relevant industrially are distillation, absorption and adsorption .

A system is at equilibrium if at constant temperature, pressure and composition the system is stable, not changing with time.

The streams leaving a stage are at equilibrium.

Rate based separation is a separation process until equilibrium is reached and then the process will proceed further.

The rate based separation will proceed indefinitely with the degree of separation increasing  in direct proportion in time.
