when alcohol and carboxylic acid is allowed to react it forms esters and process is called esterification..... saponification is opposite to it ...in this esters react in the presence of a base or an acid to form carboxylic acid and alcohol.... this reaction is used in making soaps so it is called saponification....hope it helps

The process for in which ethanol reacts with ethanoic acid (acetic acid) in the presence of concentrated H2SO4 and leads to the formation of a sweet smelling substance called ester is called esterification.
The process in which ester reacts in the presence of an acid or an base to give back ethanol and ethanoic acid is called saponification. It is the reverse of esterification
