in the sense that there are some ideas, philosophies and beliefs that are basic (fundamental) and can be accepted by everyone. But there are occasions when these basic notions can be taken to levels where they undermine the ability to deal effectively with reality (fundamentalism). In a sense the question is loaded because the fundamentalism is a human condition rather than something peculiar to religions. Just because someone says they follow the evidence does not mean they do. All of us are guilty of not considering all evidence, not listening to others and considering their point, that there may be valid points and some may actually lead us to change our minds. But most of us take a long time to change our minds and are emotionally attached or heavily invested in our own worldviews. ‘Fundamentalism’ is holding a position which is inflexible, has a worldview framed from a narrow viewpoint and is unable to hear others.
