The important difference is fission is the process of splitting and fusion is the process of combining.

Explanation:

  • The process of splitting one atom into smaller pieces is known as fission, and the process of combining two smaller atoms to form one larger atom is known as fusion.
  • In the process of fission, the energy is gained due to the splitting of atoms and the examples are uranium, xenon,  iodine, and etc.
  • In the process of fusion,  the energy is lost due to the combining of atoms and the examples are tritium, hydrogen, helium, and etc.
  • In nuclear fission the process is fast. But, in nuclear fusion, the process is slow as it undergoes several steps.
