A Galvanic cell turns chemical energy into electric energy. An electrolytic cell turns electric energy into chemical energy.

Heya.....✋

Distinguish between Galvanic cell and Electrolytic cell⤵

(i)GC(Galvanic cell) is a device which converts chemical energy into electrical energy .Here, electric current is produced by occurring chemical reaction.
But EC(Electrolytic cell) is a device which converts electrical energy into chemical energy.Here, chemical reaction occurs with the help of electricity.

(ii)In GC, Anode=-ve and cathode=+ve while anode is +ve and cathode is -ve in EC.

(iii)GC--->Exothermic and Spontaneous while EC--->Endothermic and Non-Spontaneous

(iv)In GC, oxidation and reduction occurs in two separate vessel called half cell while oxidation and reduction occurs in same vessel(voltameter) in case of EC.

(v)In GC, generally salt bridge is taken but that is absent in EC.

(vi)In GC, direction of electron from electrode(anode) to external circuit but in EC, direction of electron is from external circuit to electrode(cathode).

(vii)In GC, ions are discharged only at cathode but in electrolytic cell, on using inert electrode ions are discharged at both electrodes. In fact, cations are discharged at cathode and anions are discharged at anode.

(viii)In GC, wt. of anode decreases and wt. of cathode increases, but in EC(on using inert electrode) wt. of anode and cathode increases or remain same in the case of gaseous product .

Hope it helps✅
