The continuous phase in a sol is a liquid and the dispersed phase is a solid. The difference between a sol and a non-colloidal liquid is that solid nanoparticles are dispersed throughout the liquid in a sol. If you put a sol in a centrifuge, you can force the nanoparticles dispersed in the liquid to precipitate out.
