Difference between genuine leather and leather

There really is no difference. When it says "genuine leather", that's just to clarify that it isn't fake leather. But even if it just says "leather", it's definitely still real leather. The only way you can be sure it isn't real leather is if it specifically says that there is no leather in the product.

As for using leather products that you already own, you're not contributing to the leather industry by using the product, like you would be if you bought a new leather product. Some might say that by using a leather product, you are "advertising" for leather, or you send the message that leather is OK. I don't really agree with that, because most people won't think anything of it. They're not going to go buy a leather product just because they see you with one. However, if you buy a new non-leather product, then you would be supporting alternatives to leather, which could be a good thing (and if you donate your old leather product to charity, it would be even better :) So it's really just a personal choice, and it wouldn't be hypocritical or anything to continue using old leather product
