Swim+ing = swimming
He is swimming in the pool. ( present continuous)
Swimming is a good exercise. ( gerund=sub of the sentence)

Or v3 used as adj too.
A baby is crying. (Present continuous)
I saw a crying baby. ( crying qualifies noun'baby' used as adj.)
Don't touch the broken glass. (Here v3 of break used as adj &says about the condition of the glass)
