Gestation is the process and period of development of an embryo or foetus inside the womb between the time of fertilisation, conception and birth. This process occurs in female viviparous animals. It is typically a mammalian process, but also occurs in some non-mammals.
Spawning is the process by which the eggs and sperms are released into the water by aquatic animals, except in aquatic mammals and reptiles. In such a process, the fertilisation takes place outside the animal body and they are called oviparous.
