Gram negative bacteria will stain red because the thin peptidoglycan layer is surrounded by the plasma membrane and thus will not stain with crystal violet. bacteria that retain the crystal violet dye do so because of a thick layer of peptidoglycan and are called Gram-positive bacteria.
