Sound card converts digital sound to analog (which can be sent to headphones or speakers), or converts analog sound from a microphone or other source to digital. Many computers have a chip on the motherboard to do sound in conjunction with the cpu and chipset. A discrete (separate) sound card always gives better sound, has better features, and takes some of that work away from the cpu. But get a separate sound card only if you are serious about sound.
A graphics card, like a sound card, can be on the motherboard or a separate card. A separate card always gives better results, and if you want the Vista Aero interface, you need a separate sound card (with one or two exceptions, graphics on motherboard just doesn't have enough power).
But for office settings graphics on motherboard is OK.If you add a separate sound or video card, you must disable the sound or graphics on motherboard to avoid problems. This is done in the BIOS settings screen.
