A hacker may be authorised to explore methods of breaching computer security, so that the security may be improved. Unauthorised hackers breach computer security with malicious intentions like data theft, bank fraud etc.

Crackers are similar to unauthorised hackers in that, they break into computer defences with negative intentions.
