Hard water contains mangnesium salt MgSO₄.
Na₂CO₃+MgSO₄=MgCO₃+Na₂SO₄
MgCO₃ heated gives MgO and CO₂
Hence hardness is removed
Na₂CO₃+MgSO₄=MgCO₃+Na₂SO₄
