1.HEXAGONAL CLOSE PACKING

when the Tetrahedral voids of the second layer is covered by the spheres of the third layer. so that the spheres of the third layer are exactly aligned with those of the first layer, we get a pattern of spheres which is repeated in alternate layers. This pattern can be written in the form of ABAB.... pattern which is known as hexagonal close packing.

2.EX: magnesium and zinc have this type of pattern.

CUBIC CLOSE PACKING

1.When the third layer is placed above the second layer in manner such that it's spheres cover the octahedral voids and the spheres of the third layer is not aligned with first or the second layer, arrangement is called cubical close packing. This pattern is ABCABC. This structure is called cubic close packing.
