•Difference between horizontal

resistance and vertical resistance :

a) HORIZONTAL RESISTANCE :

1) It is polygenic, and acts against all

races of blight.

2) It slows down the rate at which

disease increases in the field.

3) A slow rate of disease increase in

the field greatly enhances the

benefit from reducing the initial

inoculum.

4)Therefore, horizontal resistance

greatly enhances vertical

resistance:

horizontal resistance activates the

R-genes.

5)The R-genes have fallen into

disrepute because they were

used wrongly:

they were used to replace

horizontal resistance, whereas

they should be used only to

supplement in horizontal

resistance.

b) VERTICAL RESISTANCE :

1) It is oligogenic, and can be

overcome by a change of race

2) It reduces the initial amount of

inoculum from which the

epidemic begins.

3) It is conferred by the R genes.

*POLYGENIC means when one

character is influenced by one or

more genes.

*OLIGOGENIC means when one

character is influenced by few

genes.

Difference between horizontal resistance and vertical resistance:

  • The differences between vertical and horizontal resistance lies in the specification of the race.
  • When there is an absence or no interaction that is specific between the  genotype of pathogen and the host then It comes under horizontal resistance due to the non specification of Race.
  • The characterised and specific interaction between the pathogen genotype and the host gives rise to the presence of vertical resistance.
  • Hence, the race specific interaction gives rise to this type of resistance.
