Difference between imbibition and osmosis

Osmosis is the movement of water from higher concentration to lower concentration it is passive transport which happens in plasma membrane it is cellular transport 

Imbibition is a natural transport in which water is absorb or adsorb by any substance without energy

Imbibition

 Absorption of water by solid.

 Semi permeable membrane is not required.

 Steep pressure gradient is required to start imbibition.

Osmosis

 Movement of water from higher water potential to lower water potential.

 Semi permeable membrane is required.

 Even small pressure gradient can start osmosis.
