One of things I wanted to do when in India was challenge some of my western preconceptions, see things from a different perspective as it were. I’ve tried to do this in a number of ways but one of the most fruitful, at least outside of daily lived experience, is comparing Indian and western art (I’m talking about the plastic arts here – temples and sculpture, painting, tapestry and so on but the other arts are significantly different, too – I just haven’t got to them yet). I’m familiar with western art, having taken an interest for many years although I’m far from an expert.

I have started to study Indian Art with the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. The course is in its early stages and my knowledge of Indian art remains patchy. Despite this, even my cursory readings threw up a series of considerable differences to western art, differences which go beyond the obvious dissimilarities in subject, form and materials. Here are some of those key differences between Indian and western art (meaning here European art in many cases), at least as I see them during my introductory explorations.

Answer:

The fundamental distinction between Western and Indian art is that following the Renaissance, the West saw the Impressionists, followed by Cubism, and so on. But we had already moved past those phases. They weren't essential since we already had all of these components in our tribal and traditional art from India, and we still do.

Explanation:

The main distinctions between Western and Asian art are based on perspective.

There are two primary forms of perspective used in fine art: dynamic and fixed. Asian painters combine space and time in their paintings to produce dynamic perspectives. Western viewpoints are often fixed, which gives art a more authentic and realistic feel.

Representation

Eastern art often adopts an expressive and inventive method to depict what a person sees, hears, and feels when it comes to the expression of ideas and emotions on canvas. In this instance, Western art aims to be more realistic and hence more representational. To produce paintings that are crisper and more precise, artists employ lighting, shade, and form.

perspective on nature

Both sides have traditionally placed a high value on nature and the environment, but their painting techniques are very different. For Asians, nature is the Absolute and humanity is but a component of it. For individuals from the West, nature is something that may be attained.

Religion

Last but not least, there are religious differences between Western and Asian artists and sculptors. It is a truth that American and European artists produced works of art under the framework of one faith, Christianity. Asian masters simultaneously displayed many ideologies.

Asian art and Western art have been opposing forces of development for ages. These days, the distinction between the two is so negligible that even seasoned art experts cannot make it. There is no winner in this comparison because each type is necessary and legitimate.

What is the difference between Indian Philosophy and Western Philosophy?

  • Moksha or Nirvana is the end of life, and is the goal of life in Indian philosophy, while Western philosophy emphasizes the here and now and believes that this life includes everything.
  • While Western philosophy begins and ends with Christianity, Eastern philosophy is a mixture of Hinduism, Islam, Taoism, Buddhism, etc.
  • Indian philosophy is internally dependent, but western philosophy is externally dependent
  • Indian philosophy is integrated with religion, whereas Western philosophy is the opposite and independent of religion.
