There's one major distinction between an intranet and the Internet: The Internet is an open, public space, while an intranet is designed to be a private space. An intranet may be accessible from the Internet, but as a rule it's protected by a password and accessible only to employees or other authorized users.

Internet :

The Internet is the global system of interconnected computer networks that use the Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to link devices worldwide.

Intranet :

An intranet is a private network that is contained within an enterprise. It may consist of many interlinked local area networks and also use leased lines in the wide area network. Typically, an intranet includes connections through one or more gateway computers to the outside Internet.

The internet is the one on which you can access anything and that is what an individual uses at home or on his/her mobile, while Intranet is inter connected network in a company or an organisation. For example take SBI bank which has intranet in its banks. The sites which are permitted or only sbi network is accessed there.
