irony is simply a more or less refined way of expressing a meaning in a reversed way, conveying you are not quite naive. Understanding and using fine irony is generally considered as a sign of intelligence. People who don’t understand irony are generally considered to be pretty naive and somewhat ridiculous.
Some ironic phrases have become standard vocabulary such as: “when hell freezes over”, “when there are two fridays in a week” and “hairs on an egg”.
Sarcasm is a belligerous crude form of irony, which is always meant to hurt and strongly express your supposedly justified anger and/or malicious contempt.
