The books have little in common except their era, the gender of their authors and my copies have a uniform binding.
One is written over a short time scale, about a happy, lively, fairly affluent young woman written by a happy, lively, fairly affluent ... with a mischievous flair for humour. While not lacking in depth, it has a veneer of frivolity that makes it a light frothy, but ultimately satisfying read.
The other covers a much longer timescale, the heroine is dependent on an uncaring world. The most uncomfortable part is that it is written as a first person narrative, you see through Jane's eyes, she tells you want to think - which I find intrusive and disturbing. I'm not sure I can face going through it again. I've done that one and got Jasper fforde's joke so let's move away slowly and no one need get hurt!
Now pass me Pride and Prejudice I haven't read it this month!
