Difference between keratinized and nonkeratinized mucosa

What is the difference between akeratinized layer and a non-keratinized layer? A keratinized layer will be seen on the outer layers of the skin. So, our entire epidermis isstratified squamous epithelium(keratinized in most areas). Our oral cavity and esophagus is all stratified squamous.
