Difference between laminate and veneers in prosthodontics
Answers
A Brief Look at Lumineers®
Lumineers® are a form of laminates and are most effective in the effort to extend the size of teeth. They also help correct a minor chip in a tooth or an alteration to tooth color. Lumineers® are quite thin compared to veneers. The lightweight and lack of obtrusion is a large part of what makes Lumineers® so popular.
It also helps that we only remove minimal amounts of enamel to place the Lumineers®. In fact, it might be possible to remove no enamel at all when applying Lumineers®. They are also commonly favored for being nowhere nearly as invasive as other prospective solutions.
The tooth itself is unchanged throughout the application of the Lumineers®. We do not completely destroy the enamel of the tooth during this procedure. This surprisingly strong and shockingly thin solution provides patients with both a functional and aesthetically pleasing smile.
A Brief Look at Veneers
Those looking to close a wide gap between their teeth will find Lumineers® are not the best solution. In such an instance, the use of conventional veneers would likely prove more prudent. Veneers provide additional flexibility in the molding process that ultimately yields the most visually impressive look.
However, there is a potential downside to veneers in that we need to shave a larger portion of the tooth away before affixing the veneers. This removal allows the veneers and the teeth to stick to one another. If there is a need to remove the veneer at some point in the future, then the process will expose the tooth to an unprotected state yet again.
