Lan:

A local area network is a computer network that interconnects computers within a limited area such as a residence, school, laboratory, university campus or office building. By contrast, a wide area network not only covers a larger geographic distance, but also generally involves leased telecommunication circuits.

For example, if you connect a printer to a machine on your network and use your computer's software to share the printer, the printer is not really a LAN device since it is not directly connected to the LAN. It will then be part of the LAN if you attach a Wi-Fi adapter or connect an Ethernet cable to the same printer.

Wan :

A wide area network is a telecommunications network that extends over a large geographic area for the primary purpose of computer networking. Wide area networks are often established with leased telecommunication circuits.

LAN has short propagation delay than MAN as well as WAN. It covers the smallest area such as: College, School Hospital and so on.

Wide Area Network (WAN):

WAN covers the large area than LAN as well as MAN such as: Country/Continent etc. WAN is expensive and should or might not be owned by one organization. PSTN or Satellite medium are used for wide area network.
