Landslides are quite literally what the name states - Land that may include vegetation, fall down a sloped terrain. Generally land slides are caused due to a loosing of soil and is does not occur over great distances.

An avalanche follows the same mechanism but generally it is in a much larger scale and is more long-lasting than a landslide. It can happen with snow, land , etc.
