Language change is the phenomenon by which permanent alterations are made in the features and the use of a language. All natural languages change, and language change affects all areas of language use. Examples of language change include sound changes, lexical changes, semantic changes and syntactic changes.

Language variation is the study of those features in language that differ systematically in comparison to a speaker or a group of speakers in different situations. Some aspects of language variation include accents, dialects and gender. All of these aspects can be analysed in several ways.
