Latitude is the distance, measured in degrees, minutes and seconds, north and south from the Equator. Altitude is the distance, measured in feet or meters, above (or, in rare instances, below) mean sea level. The former is useful for navigation, the latter is useful for adjusting baking temperatures (and, of course, for other things, as well.)
