Linear cryptanalysis makes use of random or any plain text for the action.  Although the attack has information on many plaintexts with their corresponding ciphertexts, he/she has no access to the inputs.

Differential cryptanalysis makes use of chosen plain texts or plain texts based on the context for the action. The attacker can select inputs as pairs and compare the outputs.
