Littoral forests and Swamp forests are also called the wetland forests. India has a rich variety of these types of forests. They are mainly found in reservoirs of Deccan Plateau, saline coast of Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Gulf of Kutch, Eastern Coast Deltas, lakes and Rivers of Kashmir and Ladakh, Swamps in North East India. They are part of natural vegetation in India.

Mangroove Forest

A mangrove is a shrub or small tree that grows in coastal saline or brackish water. The term is also used for tropical coastal vegetation consisting of such species.

Ecosystem

Mangrove forests make up one of the most productive and biologically diverse ecosystems on the planet. They grow in a variety of depths of salt water, their roots sticking up out of the mud, with fish, crustaceans and a host of other species living between tree trunks.

Abiotic factors

Let's take a closer look at these five main abiotic factors – salinity, flooding, temperature, light, and nutrients – and see how they affect mangroves, and how mangroves deal with them by, in some cases, developing special adaptations.

biotic factors

The mangroves are fragile complex and dynamic ecosystem, and are dependent on the following inter-related, environmental both, biotic and abiotic factors :

• Climatic factor.

• Rainfall.

• Wind.

• Soil.

• Tidal Amplitude.

• Flora and Vegetation.

• Fauna.

• Microorganisms.

Characteristics

Mangroves are salt-tolerant trees, also called halophytes, and are adapted to life in harsh coastal conditions. They contain a complex salt filtration system and complex root system to cope with salt water immersion and wave action. They are adapted to the low oxygen conditions of waterlogged mud.

Littoral Forest

Littoral forests are forests along the coast and cayes featuring salt-tolerant vegetation. They occur in patches and narrow strips along the mainland coast and cayes.

Where are littoral forests found in India?

In India, littoral forests are found in the saline coast of Rajasthan and Gujarat, along the rivers of Ladakh and Kashmir, Swamps of Northeast India, etc.
