A manometer is an instrument that is used to indicate and measure the pressure by using a column of liquid. It is used for detecting pressures of a very low range that are usually close to the atmospheric pressures and vacuum. The liquids like toluene, CCl4, mercury, alcohol are used in one of the limbs of the manometers.

A mechanical gauge or a mechanical manometer provides a rapid and quicker response when compared to the liquid manometers. They are used for reading higher pressure ranges. they can also be used to measure the pressure difference between 2 different points in a pipe. The time lag is caused because of the liquid displacement.
