Many people use the term "oceans" and "sea" interchangeably when speaking about the ocean, but there is a difference between the two terms when speaking of geography (the study of earth's surface). Sea are smaller than oceans and are usually located where the land and ocean meet.

An inland sea (also known as an epeiric sea or an epicontinental sea) is a shallow sea that covers central areas of continents during periods of high sea level that result in marine transmissions

A marginal sea - a marginal sea is a division of an ocean, partially enclosed by islands, archipelagos, or peninsulas, adjacent to or widely open to the open ocean at the surface, and/or bounded by submarine ridges on the sea floor.
