Difference between Mitosis and Meiosis.
Answers
Cells divide and reproduce in two ways, mitosis and meiosis. Mitosis results in two identical daughter cells, whereasmeiosis results in four sex cells. Below we highlight the keys differences and similarities between the two types of cell division.
☯ Difference between Mitosis and Meiosis :
✞ Mitosis ✞
➹ Mitosis occurs in somatic (body) cells throughout the life.
➹ It is an equational cell division. The number of chromosomes in the daughter cells remains the same as in the present cell.
➹ It results in the formation of two exactly similar cells having diploid number of chromosomes.
➹ It involves only one nuclear division.
➹ It provides growth and development.

✞ Meiosis ✞
➹ Meiosis occurs in reproductive cells only at the time of gamete formation.
➹ It is reductional cell division. The number of chromosomes is reduced to half in the daughter cells.
➹ Four haploid daughter cells, each with one set of chromosomes are produced.
➹ It involves two nuclear divisions that occur in quick succession, i.e., meiosis I and meiosis II.
➹ It leads to gamete formation.
